The Northern Colorado Actors Studio and The Longmont Theatre Company
presents: Scene Study
| About the workshop | |
| |
Scene study gives an actor the opportunity to work on all the essential elements of the acting process in a contained and concentrated way. When we rehearse plays we hear expressions all the time for example: “FOCUS”! “Pick up the cues”... “React don't act”...”Find the beats in this scene”.... and most of the time the meaning of these phrases is not adequately explained. And as a result often the actor gets the same note over and over.... creating frustration for both the actor and director.
The purpose of this class is to provide actors with tools to understand and apply these theatrical buzz words in a way that is effective and can make the experience less frustrating and more fun. Scene study is also a wonderful way to stretch our talents in a safe and judgement free environment.
The following is the outline for the class:
- Approach the scene (first steps)
- Analyze the text (What is the author's intention)
- Break down the material into beats
- What is a "beat"?
- How is it useful?
- How do I apply it to my work? Listen and react honestly
- Active Listening: Harder than you think... essential to your craft.
- Reaction vs Acting. How reacting comes from truly listening to your partner.
- Action Cues. What it is and how listening can help you pick up the pace of a scene.
- Make strong choices to "raise the stakes" - Active choices vs. Passive choices
- EXPERIMENTATION VS Self Consciousness.
- Behave honestly and in the moment with the other actor
- Eye Contact. Body Language. Expressions and Micro Expressions. How they can assist or influence a scene.
- Personalize the text and circumstances
- GOTE explained and Applied.
- Articulate and work from the specific circumstance of the scene (who, what, why, where, when)
- Improvise the scene to explore the depths of the characters world
- Capture the style and tone of the play. Style and Tone are not something an actor accomplishes in one reading or in one emotional response. Tone is set in the text and how the actor responds to it.
- Create the world that the character lives in.
- Select suitable scenes that work for you
- Rehearse fearlessly and with passion for your craft.
